Social Responsibility
Service Before Self
We strongly believe that we are a brand created and loved by the people. And for that reason we routinely engage our time, services and funds into the benefit of the society. Our family roots come from a small coastal village named ‘Murud’ located in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. This tiny village on the map has produced several towering figures in the history of India, most notable of whom was Prof. Dhondo Keshav Karve.
Born in Murud, Prof. Karve was a 19th/20th century social reformer who boldly championed for women rights, widow remarriage and education. He worked majorly in Pune where he founded and ran the Stree Shikshan Sanstha (Women Education Society) and India’s first Women University (now the SNDT). Despite of being the birthplace of such a bright Indian jewel (“Bharat Ratna”), Murud did not have any significant memorial for this great man except for a small ignored bust by the roadside raised decades ago by the government. This is where we realised our social responsibility and stepped in.
We took it to ourselves to spontaneously build a memorial for this great saintly son of our village. For this we approached the heirs and trustees of Prof. Karve’s Women Institute in Pune who were kind enough to lend us some of his belongings, archived photographs and writings by and on him. We have preserved all of these articles of his memory in a memorial constructed within our domestic premises at Murud which is all time open and free for visitors. This, we believe, is a small homage from us to the noblest deeds and memories of Prof. Dhondo Keshav Karve.
